GML sleeves undergo tinning, and their surface is coated with a special tin-bismuth layer. This layer protects the sleeve from corrosion and oxidation. Copper has a tendency to oxidize, and tinning prevents this. Thus, during crimping, the copper wires and the tinned sleeve do not react with each other (do not oxidize).
