The operation of the loop isolator in the ALS is based on its ability to break the circuit, increasing the electrical connection resistance between the ALS1 and ALS2 terminals up to 4 kOhm upon detecting signs of a short circuit. The loop isolator disconnects short-circuited sections of the addressable communication line, thereby ensuring the operability of the rest of the communication line.
When the short circuit is eliminated, the loop isolator automatically restores the operability of the addressable communication line.
The IZ-1-R3 loop isolator is an addressable device and occupies 1 address in the ALS. The isolator transmits information about its status to the control panel via the ALS line.
The board is equipped with two two-contact terminals (ALS1 and ALS2) for connecting the incoming and outgoing lines. The ALS1 and ALS2 terminals are completely symmetrical and equivalent when connected to the addressable line. The protected section of the ALS starts at the isolator and ends at the next isolator or at the last device in the line or branch.
Using loop isolators in the ALS allows for:
breaking a radial ALS at the location of the isolator closest to the short circuit point. This localizes the section after the isolator and leaves the ALS section between the device and the tripped loop isolator operational;
breaking a ring ALS between two loop isolator installation points. This localizes the section between the isolators and leaves the other ALS sections operational.
