Together they form an IR beam, the attenuation of which the device uses to detect the presence of smoke. The signal from the emitter passes through the controlled medium, is reflected from the reflector, and is captured by the receiver. In the event of a fire, smoke from the fire source rises to the ceiling, and the smoke-filled medium causes attenuation of the optical beam. In the receiver, the attenuated signal level is compared with the signal level obtained during setup and received as a signal corresponding to an optically clear medium. As soon as the ratio reaches the set threshold, a "Fire" signal is generated, which is transmitted to the PPCU via the ALC line.
