Alloying the steel with molybdenum and nickel significantly increases its corrosion resistance in most aggressive environments. Compared to 304 steel, 316 stainless steel is better protected against pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments, seawater, and in vapors of sulfuric, phosphoric, boric, formic, acetic, oxalic, lactic, and other acids. 316 steel has higher strength and better creep resistance at higher temperatures than AISI 304.
