AISI 316 steel, also known as "marine stainless steel," is an improved version of general-purpose AISI 304 steel, with a higher nickel content and molybdenum additives. Alloying steel with molybdenum and nickel significantly increases its corrosion resistance in most aggressive environments. Compared to 304 steel, 316 stainless steel is more protected against pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments, seawater, and vapors of sulfuric, phosphoric, boric, formic, acetic, oxalic, lactic, and other acids. 316 steel has higher strength and better creep resistance at higher temperatures than AISI 304.
