Non-linear surge arresters (SA) are designed to protect electrical equipment insulation from lightning and switching overvoltages. The arrester is a post-type protective device consisting of series-connected metal-oxide varistors without series and parallel spark gaps, enclosed in an insulating housing. Surge arresters provide effective protection for low-voltage overhead lines, distribution transformer substations, and branches to residential and industrial buildings. This arrester is installed in 50 Hz AC networks with isolated or compensated neutral.
