SPD Type 1 (Class 1) is used to protect against large surge overvoltages (lightning strike, high voltage surge during short circuit). Installed in locations where direct lightning strikes to overhead power lines are possible, or as the 1st stage of protection in an object's external lightning protection system. Testing and standardization of Class I SPD is carried out with impulse current Iimp – 10/350 μs, rated discharge current In – 8/20 μs, impulse voltage – 1.2/50 μs. Class 1 SPDs are installed, for example, in a meter box on a pole, outside a house (before the meter), in the main distribution board (MDB) of the object, or in the input-distribution device (IDU).
